What does relish mean in london?

Im reading "Two bottles of relish" for school but i cant figure out what exactly relish is in london...i know its not what we consider relish in the USA because that is what my teacher but she didnt tell me what it DID mean...help?

  2. I just read the first few pages of the play. I think in this case it doesn't actually matter what the relish is it is just a plot device in the story, something the man is selling to make a living.

    I've not finished the book so it may also be a metaphor.

    Relish is normally a condiment eaten with cold or hot meats or cheese. Like burger relish, mustard, ketchup, ploughmans pickle etc.

  3. Erm, I think you're teacher is wrong!  Even in the UK Relish is the red burger relish - the one with tomatoes, onions, little yellow mustard seeds and so one.

    There is one thing overhere we have called Gentlemens Relish which I believe is an acquired tasted!  It's a paste I believe made of anchovies.

    Or maybe she meant pickle?  In which case the most famous brand is Branston, its brown and contains a list of ingredients which sound foul (onions, apple, cabbage, seasoning) but tastes great with cheese and cold meats.  

    We even have Piccalilli - a seriously bright yellow pickle, very sharp and tangy which contains huge lumps of cauliflower, gherkin, baby onions and seasoning.  Again, great with cold meats and cheese but you don't want too much!

  4. Its just the same as it is in America, you're teachers wrong.  Its definetly not brown sauce thats a different condiment entirely, i know very few people wo have brown sauce on their burgers!!

  5. In England, what they call "relish" or even "American Relish" is something we dont even have here. Its a brown sauce, and you can find it at some stores, called simply "brown sauce." Its similar to ketchup or Heinz 57 sauce, kinda tangy and sweet. They use it on meats and burgers.
