What does ruff around the edges mean?

I tried looking it up but couldn't find the exact definition. I heard it being said to a person...

  1. I believe it means that you look like a serious  person, a person hard to approach at times but once you get to know them you see a person with a good personality, with  more softer sides

Do you really meant to spell it that way?  Then "ruff" around the edges means a frilly thing, a collar of lace, that goes around the edges of something.  If you mean "rough" around the edges, of course it means something or someone who is coarse in the sense of "unfinished" or "yet to be polished."

  4. When someone or something is said to be "rough around the edges", it means that he/she/it has great potential, but lacks "polish."

    It's kinda a compliment ... kinda a slam.  It's saying that the person or thing in question could be great, but needs work.

  5. Well in my opinion it means someone who has some improvements needing to be made. A person who is too aggressive in personality or who is too unrefined. Here's a definition that I found:

    "If someone is rough around the edges, they haven't mastered something, though they show promise".
