What does side out mean in volleyball?

I kinda know that when you're receiving the ball. But what does it really mean?

Sideout means to get the point back when the other team is serving the ball.

A side out is when the other team loses the right to serve the ball.  A side out can occur under a variety of situations.  Most common reasons are  the receiving team hitting the ball inside the serving teams court for a point or the serving team hitting the ball out of bounds or having more than 3 hits.  Another reason is if the service team touches the net on a spike or a block.  Other not so common reasons are out of rotation for the service team when they serve the ball or the service team being "over" the net while the ball is in play on the other side.  There are plenty of other reasons and much more detail to the rules.  Try finding a rule book on-line or in the library if you want further information!

Side out is when the serve switches teams (sides) without points being scored. So, if I start the game by serving you the ball, and you make a mistake, I get a point. BUT....If I start the game by serving the ball to you and I make a mistake, then it is SIDE OUT to you...with no points being tallied.

It is regular term for old v-ball rule when you win on other team's serving game to take back the serving rights in order to win points.(on old rule, you don't get points on side-out, but only on your serving game) Now, Side-out becomes a history, but people may still apply it to a receiving game.

A side-out is simply winning a point when the other team served, and thus earning the right for your team to serve.  You may or may not *score* a point when this occurs depending on if you're playing by the newer "rally scoring" rules (yes) or the traditional "side-out" scoring rules (no).
