What does skating lights out in figure skating mean?

I know it means the skater had an amazing performance, but where did it come from, and is there a literal interpretation as well?

I dont know what it really means but in the old days when people skated really well maybe the turned the lights off or something. I don'tknow I just guessing. ;)
