  1. It means exactly what it says. The surface under the bed felt is either slate or something else (it doesn't have to be particle board either).

  2. A slate bed table uses slate rock under the cloth and a non slate table uses a cheaper alternative. A genuine slate bed is usually more expensive and always a better quality table. By the way, pool tables are not always one piece slate. Actually 2 and 3 piece slate tables are more common and can be set up to play better than 1 piece slate tables.

  3. i wondered about this too but i found out that it is the hard surface that is just under the felt... slate is really heavy marble like rock that's really flat and even so the ball will move straight

  4. A slate bed table uses just that, slate and a manufacturer typically uses 1" slate for their tables. If you're serious about playing pool and owning a high end pool table, a slate feature is a must.

A non-slate table would be something like pressed particle board. That material is found on a table that you might purchase at a Rec Warehouse or Wal Mart. Avoid this kind of table at all costs regardless of what a salesman says. I will only concede that a non-slate surface is cheaper.

Unlike slate that will not warp, particle board will warp and separate when exposed to a humid climate.

I hope that helps to answer your question.

  5. Slate is used on good tables.

Mdf is usually the other base used.

It tends to warp very quickly, making the table run off badly.

Thats why you rarely find a decent one second-hand.

If buying,i suggest buying a table from a competition.

I got mine from Reighton sands.

They also sell them off after the tournaments at Cleethorpes and Skegness.

I paid £540 for mine.Plus an extra £100 to have it stored for three weeks, then delivered and set up.

For this i got a supreme winner table. It was only used for two days.Immaculate condition. As new. With balls.

Fantastic for a brand new proffesional tournament standard table.

Someone said a slate bed table is hard to set up.

If it was a full size snooker table (which uses three slates for the bed) he's right. But a pool table only uses one slate. So its very easy to set up.You just adjust the legs.

  6. slate is exactly that- a slab or some times several slabs made into a 12x6 ft block

they use the top end stuff not roof slate as such thats mined at a different level+method

the non slate are wood-often badly built+rarely use a mahogany(well dear) or marine play base.

wood bases are the ones that run off big time+eventually all cushion shots will go in 1st time every time-where you lean on it is where the damage occurs-thats why slate have 6 legs-always bulbous-this acts as a shock absorber+a good firm base to support the table+user

  7. Slate is much more expensive but better than the wooden playing surface. Slate is more difficult to set up and has to be reset up every time the table is moved. Slate is professional and wood is a decent home version.
