  1. It's not really stomping, more like hopping.  Short boards have lots of drag which slows them down in small or slow surf.  Hopping pumps water through the fins lessing the drag and generating speed.  You can accomplish the same by making sharp little s-turns.

  2. makes you look stupid..

pumping the waves lets you feed off the waves energy to build your speed... but do it without doing all the hopping that actually creates too much downforce which hurts more than helps.

to generate speed you need to be able to put as much surface of your board to water as possible... do this riding up the face and down (youll speed going down) ... AND do this while maintaining a fairly straight line without any drastic turns and you feel the wave push you faster and faster.

its hard to explain ... hard to learn.. but rewarding man

...plus you wont look like a kook.

  3. it can do a few different things depending on where on the wave you "stomp".  you really shouldnt stomp since all you will do is ding your board, rather you should pump.  if your having a hard time getting your board to drop in sometimes a good pump can be that little extra you need to start your drop, also in mushier sections it helps keep your board going because it is basically lifting your board off the water over and over again.  pumping the face of the wave is also a really good way to gain speed down the line.  this pump should be much more fluid than one trying to drop in or keep going.  it should make your board mimic teh motion of a fishes tail.  by continually pushing on your board you are making water move over the fins faster which drives you forward like a swimming tuna.  pumping to stay going and as a last ditch effort to drop are pretty easy to get the hang of.  getting speed down the line is a little harder since you need to get a good rhythm going and know just how hard to pump.  a good cross training  excercise is pumping a longboard skateboard on land.  first get a little speed through kicking then pump the board back and forth to keep it going.  make sure to actually push against the board when turning, not just leaning.  its kinda hard to describe but eventualy you will get the feeling and be able to ride for miles without touching the asphalt and transfer your skills to the water to take your surfing to the next level.  good luck.
