What does striping the membrains do?

i am not pregnant my sister is with twins i was just wondering what striping the membrains do she is 38weeks 5 days they did it to her i had it done to put i cant remember what it does starts labor what else

they break her water so she can have the babies! I have twins too!!

Basically, what they do is separate the bag of waters from the cervix.  This is supposed to release hormones that can stimulate labor.  It does NOT break your water, unless the doctor does it wrong.

ow that hurts, basically they stick their figires into ur cervix and loosens the bag of water from yur cervical wall, this DOESNT brake your waters but it can start labour within 24hrs.

Stripping" or "sweeping" the membranes is the separation of 2-3 cm of the membranes (bag around the baby) from the underlying cervix or lower part of the uterus. It is done during a vaginal examination with the finger of the examiner. There is some evidence from research studies, and many practitioners believe, that stripping the membranes may help to start labor in women who are past their due date (from 41-42 weeks of gestation). Unfortunately, if the cervix is closed, it is not possible to strip the membranes, and it is the woman with a closed cervix who has the greatest chance of not going into labor on her own. The procedure of stripping the membranes is no more uncomfortable than the usual vaginal exam (never very comfortable!) and has not been shown to cause complications such as infection or bleeding.

Your doctor takes her fingers and "wipes" in between the sack that the baby is in and your pelvis. It separates and is VERY uncomfortable but with both of my pregnancies I had it done in the AM and went into labor that afternoon.

It doesnt work everytime or with every person but it did on me.

I must stress though, it is VERY uncomfortable and hurts but it only takes a minute or two.
