  3. Most system recovery CD's give you the option to either re-install windows, leaving your data intact, or to completely format your drive, wiping out EVERYTHING, essentially returning your system to it's "factory fresh" settings.

    Some do not give the first option and will wipe everything out.

    Either way, if you have installed programs after your got your computer, you will have to re-install all of those programs to get to your data.

    If you are trying to get rid of a virus, the only thing that is guaranteed to work is to do the full format/"factory refresh" option.  Backup your data first to a USB drive, DVD, CD etc. before performing the restore.
