What does tape on the bottom of drums do?

well a couple months ago i bought a drum set and it came with duct tape on the bottom of my 2 air toms and my floor tom. im wondering what the tape does. so if you could please tell me that would be great!!!

  1. The duck tape is used for muffling (damping) drums.  Its also known as "gaffer tape" and its mostly used when the natural resonance of the drum shell and/or skin may be too much.
