  1. Homework for sure

    Look it up

    Google does wonders

  2. That sounds a lot like a homework assignment?

Type each of those in on Wikipedia.  It has full descriptions.

    http://www.wikipedia.org

  3. Telnet is a text based terminal protocol to communicate with other servers on network port 23.  Besides telnet servers, it can also be used to communicate with or test other types of text based servers on other ports, like mail or web servers (if you know port used and what to type in to get a proper response).

I am sure you can find more info about any of those terms with a web search.

  4. telnet is dialing other computers and phones over the internet

Internet relay chat is like MSN messenger or yahoo messenger.

File Transfer Protocol is the main method of accesing files over a network.

Ping is when a computer sends a message to a computer, and gets it to send a reply. It is used to test connections. However, some are set to ignore ping requests.

Are you setting up a server or someting along the lines? Or just setting up a firewall or network adapter?

  5. Telnet = TELecommunications NETwork

It's just a set of protocols used for local area networking.

  6. TELNET (TELecommunication NETwork) is a network protocol used on the Internet or local area network (LAN) connections. It was developed to remotely manage computer networks as they began to grow in the early 70s.  The people that really new computers were few and far between and couldnt be in multiple places at once.  This allowed them to "remote" into routers, switches, and main frames to make changes or fix them.

The term telnet also refers to software which implements the client part of the protocol. TELNET clients are available for virtually all platforms. Most network equipment and OSs with a TCP/IP stack support some kind of TELNET service server for their remote configuration (including ones based on Windows NT). Because of security issues with TELNET, its use has waned as it is replaced by the use of SSH for remote access.

Newsgroups are places where people share information (or files) about subjects they find interesting.  From music, to sports, to games.

IRC is a way of chatting about certain topics.  Someone sets up an IRC Server and then others can connect to it and chat about similar topics called channels.

FTP is a way of transferring files.  It was widely used prior to HTML became big.  It is a VERY simple protocol that is still used to some extent today (however, the security was very limited).

GOPHER was in competition with HTML, but lost.  It was a way of setting up the WWW in a more searchable way.  But the WWW grew so fast, that it went by the way side.

PING is a command that is used to test network connectivity.  It is VERY powerful troubleshooting step that people sometimes forget.  It basically proves Layer 4 connectivity to eachother in the OSI model.
