In a movie (basket ball related), I heard this expression "fill out those brackets". what does that mean?

ex )Ten best ways to fill out those brackets

ex) Time to fill out those brackets

  1. Walt is right.  When the tournament starts, there are 64 teams, and the "brackets" refer to the structure of the tournament - it begins with 32 teams on each side of the sheet, arranged in the order of the teams that play each other in the first round.

    When you enter into a pool, you "fill out those brackets" by trying to predict who will win each game in the first round, then the second, and the third, and so on, until you have one team left - the champion.

    Because the NCAA tournament pools are very popular in the U.S. among coworkers and friends, every March around tournament time, you'll see an avalanche of articles by various "experts" about how to fill out your brackets.
