What does the 'peace' sign represent?

Back in the olden days, when hippies were against war, came the peace sign, which symbolizes peace and unity :)

The peace sign is two flag signs put together to say no nukes/war

It was a Roman symbol (from the time of Nero). It represents a cross (one of the symbols of The Christian's at the time) upside down with the cross arm's broken so they pointed down. In essence: the Romans thought that the only way to have peace was to break the Christians of their faith.
