  1. 48X CD Write speed

    16X CD Rewrite speed

    52X CD Read speed

  2. The first number 48x is the speed for write once operations, for example, when you are burning a CD-R.

The second number 16x is for re-write operations, for example, when you are burning a CD-RW.

The third number 52x is for read only operations, for example when you are copying  music or data off of a cd-rom disc.

These speeds are assuming that the cpu and other hardware in the system can support the operation, otherwise it throttles down to the least factor.

  3. 48x read speed, that means it can read 48 minutes worth of music in 1 minute, in comletely ideal and perfect conditions.

16x is the write speed. That means that it can write 16 minutes worth of music in 1 minute, in perfect ideal conditions. Your actuall read/write speeds will probably be about 40/14 or so, if no other programs are running.\

The 52 im not sure about.

  4. Tricky question.

    48x is 48 times faster than 1x

    16x is 16 times faster than 1x

    and so on.

I know this seems simplistic, but when the first cd roms were designed, they did not have a speed (rpm) associated with them.  So, they are just 16x, or 48x, or 52x faster than the original speed of Lord knows what.

However, the faster your CD or DVD drive, the faster it can extract data, render video, or burn a cd or dvd.

    Hope that helps.

  5. It's the rate of spin. 48x single speed, etc.
