Texas A&M means Texas Agricultural and Military University.

There was an interesting true story on how TA&M lost its military academy.

I forget the name of the other university football team they played against in the early 1900s, but the T A&M students felt there was possible cheating going on in the refereeing, so that T A&M lost the game.  So the cadets of their military academy got their ceremonial Civil War canon, and they took it to the railroad depot in town when they knew that the local freight train usually arrived.

The cadet students told the train crew that they were commandeering the train to go to the other campus, and then they were going to blow up the other campus' statue in retaliation.  They wanted the train crew to take them directly to that other town.

Whether the train crew really felt intimidated or thought that it was a great laugh, they allowed the students to hijack their train.  The students put their canon on a flat car and off the train crew went, stopping nowhere else!

Needless to say, the station agent ran and told the sheriff, and at the sheriff's request, the station agent's telegrapher sent a telegram to the station that the students were headed to.

When the train arrived at the station of the other campus, their sheriff was already waiting for them and took the cadets and their canon into custody.  As the result, Texas A&M discontinued its military academy program.

I understand that the Texas A&M military academy might have been re-established sometime recently (decade wise), but they probably had an ROTC program for many years during the time their military academy was shut down.

  3. haha, actually you both have it wrong. but what a story that was green party. blue eyes has it kinda right. it USED to be texas agricultural and mechanical. but when they started admitting females, it changed to not only an ag and mech. school but many other things as well. they decided to keep the name though. so REAL ANSWER:: it means nothing.
