What does the B mean next to a high school sports team?

doesnt necessarily mean their second best team  some sports will have more members than others and might have 5 teams in same grade because of sheer numbers. Most evident in kids sports where a school team might have 5 under 13 teams playing for them or their club . later in high school maybe they will be graded into the best to the worst and in rugby that usually means a first 15 or second 15 etc   our high school had a fourth fifteen playing

In South Africa it is usually the second team

I'm going to guess it means their B team.

As in you have an A team, a B team, etc.

So it would be their second best team for whatever age group.
