  1. CVN - Aircraft Carrier Nuclear powered

As of 1920 the letter V designated heavier than air craft as opposed to  (Z) lighter than air craft like blimps, dirigibles which the Navy used to operate.

V  currently designates fixed wing aircraft  while H would designate rotary wing aircraft (Helicopters)   See Link for LHA - Amphibious Assault Helicopter Carrier

The letter V is also used in squadron designations to Identify the  type of aircraft fixed vs rotary wing  primarily used in the squadron.

For Example:   VFA-2  Strike(Attack) Fighter Squadron two "Bounty Hunters" flying F/A-18's

  2. I'm not sure of the v but the c stands for aircraft carrier and the n stands for nuclear powered.

  3. The V stands for fixed wing.
