  1. A p***s.

  2. The old original church steeples had clocks in them so that people would know when to come to church.  That was before watches were an affordable commodity.  They also had bells as a reminder of when church started.

  3. the bell tower, calls the town to worship.

  4. While I can't answer your question exactly, I do know that the church was traditionally the tallest building in its immediate area, making it the focal point in many communities.  The fact that the steeple towered above surrounding buildings allowed it to be seen from many parts of a town, neighborhood, or even city as a constant reminder of God's presence and importance in people's daily lives.  Also, our culture associates height with value (hence, to hold something on a pedistal or hold someone in high esteem) so to have the church as your town's highest building was also a sign of respect, showing that religion was the most imortant thing in people's lives.  As for the shape of a steeple...  I'm not so sure about the symbolism there, but the guess about it pointing to heaven seems a good one.  Also, many steeples are topped by crosses.  This is just my idea, but maybe the steeple points to the cross and THEN to heaven, since the Christian doctren states that only through Jesus will we reach Heaven.

  5. In the old days the church bell let the people know when services would begin and called them in.  The bell is in the steeple.

  6. Before maps and google the only way the church could advertise its location was to put up a steeple to help people identify it from far away.  It was original designed so that people could see the church from many miles away.

  7. I don't have anything to base my answer on but my best guess would be that it points to the heavens!

  8. Closeness to God. Think Tower of Babel.

  9. It points the way to Heaven.  It reminds us that we are striving to get to Heaven.

  10. The symbol of the United Church of Christ comprises a crown, cross and orb enclosed within a double oval bearing the name of the church and the prayer of Jesus, "That they may all be one" (John 17:21). It is based on an ancient Christian symbol called the "Cross of Victory" or the "Cross Triumphant." The crown symbolizes the sovereignty of Christ. The cross recalls the suffering of Christ—his arms outstretched on the wood of the cross—for the salvation of humanity. The orb, divided into three parts, reminds us of Jesus' command to be his "witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8). The verse from Scripture reflects our historic commitment to the restoration of unity among the separated churches of Jesus Christ

  11. from what i know...

back in the day, churches were built in the higher part of towns. the steeple is the highest part of the church and usually has a cross on it. it is set high so that you can see the church from a distance. or something along those lines anyway.

thats the best ive got. hope it helps.

  12. I've always thought it was symbolic of the church being closer to heaven, by being higher up than other buildings, and therefore holy.

    But I'm not completely sure.

  13. The giant phallus of God.

2000 years of f--king people & still going strong.

  14. closer to god plain and simple

  15. Reminds me of dirty things...

  16. Steeples are added to churches to house their bells.  The style has come to represent churches to such a degree that even today when bells aren't used anymore for newer churches, they still add a steeple to make a church look more 'churchy.'
