Question:

What does the E R stand for in the British Empire?

I've seen E R on many things (plates, Yeomen Warders, etc) and I have no idea what it stands for.

The only thing I can think of is something like England Royal , but I would really like to know what it actually means.

Thanks,

Jayde

  1. Elizabeth Regina= Queen Elizabeth. obviously.

  2. Elizabeth Regina

before Elizabeth the king was George and it wa GR

    which was George Rex..

  3. it depends... when you see E R in a hospital... it means emergency room..... or in other things like British documents or memorabilia in means Elisabeth Regina/ Elisabeth reigns---- applicable to Queen Elisabeth II...... OK?

  4. Elizabeth Regina...in other words Queen Elizabeth II.

When Prince Charles becomes king it will be CR for Charles Rex.

Regina and Rex are Latin for Queen and King.

  5. Elizabeth Regina

  6. elizabeth reigns

  7. It means Elizabeth Regina = Regina meaning a female ruler.

Previously there was GR (George Rex = male ruler),

    VR (Victoria Regina.

The initials change with each new monarch.

Hopefully we will not get a CR, as Charles is not fit to be head of a table, let alone a country.

  8. Elizabeth Regina (or Queen).  That's also why you sometimes see a roman number II (2) between the letters.  If Charles keeps that name, it'll be C  III  R.

  9. "ER" stands for "Elizabeth Regina", this was a very common initial which Queen Elizabeth I used to sign with her court documents. "Regina" means "Queen" in Latin, and the Queen herself spoken fluent Latin, along with a few other languages. Latin was the "international" language during the middle ages, all the upper class and well-educated people were taught in "Latin", to symbolize wealth and knowledge.

  10. It stands for: Elizabeth Regina

Like VR stands for Victoria Regina

  11. Elizabeth Regina.    latin for queen elizabeth.

i notice some other answerers speak of prince charles' future title.  he may not call himself king charles!  many monarchs chose a different name to their christian (first) name!

  12. ER mean Elizabeth Regina. It is the mark of the current Queen Elizabeth II. Regina means "queen."

  13. Yeah Moite

  14. Everyone missed an important point .   Regina, is from regnant, which means she is a reigning queen.

This is different from a non-reigning queen (the wife of a King).   For a Queen that is only queen by virtue of being married to a King, she would not put the R after her name.  Queen Elizabeth's mother, who was also named Queen Elizabeth, did NOT put R after her name because she was not the reigning queen, rather she was a "queen consort".

  15. Elizabeth Regina, for a male monarch it is Rex.
