What does the European East India Company do with trades with Asia such as British East India Company?

I read in Wikipedia but don't understand so does anyone knows what do these companies do in trade with Asia in colonial or historical time

  2. These companies traded primarily in spices but this expanded to include cotton, silk, sugar and other goods. Later on they became political and acted as agents of imperialism and ended ruling in the countries they traded with, namely India, Malaya (now Malaysia), and Indonesia. This is only the short story. For the full story read the History books on these companies.
