What does the GU 83 patch on nfl jersey stand for?

The patch says GU 63. It was Uptown Gene's number when he played for the Oakland raiders.

The patch on the jersey and also the field was GU 83, not #63. Gene Upshaw, god bless him and his family. I should make myself a bit clearer. He was only 63 years old and lost his life battling pancreatic cancer.

Gene Upshaw, who died. He was a lineman number 83 for the Raiders. It will remain there all season (i think it's dumb)

Actually, he was #63 and also died at the age 63!!! so everyone was right... sad situation but i hope his family can move on!!

Actually, it's 63. I read it in the (on-line) newspaper and can see the number on the jerseys.
