What does the Gauge mean on tennis strings?

I've seen so many strings that say there 18 gauge 16L gauge etc etc

what does this actually mean?

is any gauge string suitable on any racket?

  1. The answers are correct.The thin string is excellent for creating topspin and gives you a nice feel on the racket.Slicing and flat hitting really need a bit more time on the racket so the thicker gauge is better.The old wood rackets have very high tension and thin gauge and created exceptional topspin,but less power.

    Most club players need thicker gauge as they must have more control on the racket as we perhaps lack the ability to play effective topspin

    18 is thinner than 16

    thinner strings are more flexible & bouncy for powerful stroke

    d larger diameter strings are more firm & hard for medium racket swings
