  1. Gothic cathedrals are all vaulted arches and height height height.  It symbolizes the medieval idea of looking upwards to Heaven, since the long vertical lines pull worshippers' eyes up to the ceiling.  The medieval man was very, very religious.  The idea of a buttress to hold up these extremely tall, thin buildings was concieved of during this period, so you might say the medieval man was an adept craftsman.  Also, throughout the medieval period the churches continued to get higher and thinner and higher and thinner until the later medieval churches are hazardous to enter and were constantly repaired because they tended to collapse.  So this might lead you to say that the medieval man enjoyed challenging himself to reach greater and greater heights and surpass the people's expectations of architecture.
