  1. Sounds like the road either to get silk or to import it.

  2. Trade on the Silk Road was a significant factor in the development of the great civilizations of China, Egypt, Persia, Arabia, India, Rome, and Byzantium and helped to lay the foundations for the modern world in several respects. For the Byzantine Empire the silk road went through the heart of the empire. It was a major part of their economy their economy.

  3. The silk road was the trade route between China and the West, from the early mediaeval period to the fifteenth century.  It was never a fixed route, more a collection of routes; but many cities which lay on the silk road (particularly Samarkand) became extremely wealthy as a result of trade.

The western end of the silk road was usually Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine Empire.  This city became very rich, too.

The Byzantine Empire entered a long period of decline from the twelfth century as it came under pressure from various muslim powers, notably the Ottoman Turks.  The Ottomans finally stormed Constantinople in 1453, cutting off the silk road.

This was one of the great factors behind the Age of Exploration as western traders sought sea routes to the east - culminating in Christopher Columbus' little jaunt.
