  1. A stock market index (such as the Dow Jones or NASDAQ) as lost 20% from its latest high.

  2. A downward turning stock market that is expected to last a while.

  3. It means that a Stock Market index ( such as the Down Jones or the TSX ) has lost 20% or more in value from it's latest Record High.

& they're expecting for the Index to loose even more value.

Now the time frame at which the market/ Stock Market Index has lost 20% of it's total value from it's latest record high & it still continues loosing value. It's called a Bear Market.
