What does the X in a box on a floor plan represent?

  1. Could be any number of things, depending upon the size and context.

    It could be an attic or crawlspace access panel.  These are usually but not always drawn as dashed lines and labeled.

    A shower stall is often indicated by a box with an X.

    If the box is formed with wall lines, the X would indicate a chase running from a lower level to an upper level for duct work and pipes, or occasionally just an empty space if it is needed to make walls align properly.

    Inside a wall line, a box with an X indicates bearing studs required for support of a special load.  Somtimes a box with an X outside of a wall indicates a structural post.

    I'm sure there are other possiblities, these are just the ones I can think of now.  A better description might help.
