What does the existence of the police say about us ?

We need the police - Most if not everyone would agree right away

Yes we need some form of police

Why ?

Because we as humans can not live in peace with our neighbors that us or the people next door would steal bully and so on if it were not for a police force ?

Thats is pretty sad

We need the police ---Will we ever live in a society where we don't "need" the police ?

There are some people out there who have no idea how to behave in society because they learned that behavior from their cheep parents.  They think that killing and stealing is "cool." It's barbaric.  Thank goodness there are police to deal with those nutbags!

I doubt if we'll ever find the police obsolete, but I do have a point of disagreement. The police have a general calming effect on the community but it isn't their function to keep your neighbor from stealing from you or bullying you. That's your own responsibility. Not only are they not your personal bodyguards, but it's a tiny bit of arrogance for people to think that they can buy a cop's life for the little money they make to risk in lieu of their own. If you look at the history of police, they were originally unarmed, and called upon the community when force of arms was required. Now don't get the idea that I'm advocating disarming the police: they need self-protection as much as the rest of us. But we do need to keep in mind that our protection is our own business. If an intruder breaks into your house, it's your responsibility to get him out, and the responsibility of the police to arrest him afterwards.

Every society needs police.  This does not mean that the society as a whole is bad.  There are bad apples in every bunch.  That is why police exist.
