  1. It means if you answer, you may incriminate yourself.   You plead the fifth so you don't admit to committing a crime or have knowledge of a crime being committed.

It refers to the Fifth Amendment of the US Constitution giving a person the right not to incriminate himself.  This means he does not have to give evidence against himself.    A person may refuse to answer a question at a hearing on the grounds that it may tend to incriminate him.  Often they will say I refuse to answer on advice of counsel.  Or, I plead the Fifth Amendment.
