  1. There are 7000 grains to the pound. There was a need to weigh something quite small, and this is what was devised.

  2. A grain is the weight of a grain of wheat when dry.  It was a useful measurement at one time.  With a counter scale you would put so many grain of wheat in one side to balance the weight in the other side. This was for more accurate measurements of lighter things.  For firearm measurements it has never changed.  The higher the number the more it weighs.

  3. weight

  4. The Grain, as previously stated, is a unit of measurement of weight. I find this conversion useful:

    180 grains equal 11 grams

  5. The weight of a bullet is expressed in grains.  Example:  The .25-06 Remington is commercially loaded in: 100 grain, 115 grain, 117 grain and 120 grain bullets.  Generally speaking the lighter the grains the faster the bullet.  For hunting purposes you want lighter bullets for thin skinned animals such as varmints and medium to heavy weight bullets for big game such as deer.  I use 115 to 120 grain bullets in myn .25-06 for deer.
