  1. Currently it has no practical function. It was once used to prevent northern tribes and Mongolians from invading.

Mongolia is an independent nation, but the region of China bordering Mongolia is called "Inner Mongolia". Inner Mongolia is part of China, but Mongolia is a nation.

  2. it's only a wall now. inside China's territory.

  3. it was a wall to protect the villages from mongolians until gunpowder was invented. People were still building it until the gunpowder was invented. Since gunpowder can destroy the wall they stopped building it. Now its just one of the seven wonders and a tourist area. The thing is the wall is falling apart usually from tourism.

Extra:Many people died from building it because they would run out of cement or whatever they were using and use their rice to put some parts of it together and then the people had no food so they starved to death.

  4. one side of the wall from the other - LOL

  5. Nothing, it's just for showing off.

  6. It doesn't separate anything anymore in theory.

The best parts are tourist attractions the worse parts are falling apart.

  7. The Great Wall of China was built more than two thousand years ago originally, to defend barbarians called Xiongnu, who might be ancestors of Huns. A few centuries later, during Han dynasty, both sides of the wall were Han's territory, so the wall was not used any more. In the following centuries, the ownership of the lands close to the wall got changed for many rounds. One thousand years ago, the new ethnic group called Mongolian got formed, and took China and a big part of the world a couple of hundreds of years later. Six hundred years ago, Chinese took back the main part of China, while Mongolian were still active in the north. So the great wall got rebuilt. That was Ming Dynasty, and most wall you can see today were rebuilt during that period. Four hundred years ago, Manchurian occupy the whole China and Mongolia, so the wall stopped to serve military function again. One hundred years ago, Chinese kick out Manchurian, and tried to maintain control of Mongolia, but the northern part of Mongolia got independence with the help of Russia and Soviet Union, while the southern part next to the wall remain a part of China. So today, a part of Mongolia is a country by itself, and a part, right to the north of the great wall, is a part of China.

To summarize: The Great Wall was built in the past thousands of years to defend all kinds of nomads, first Xiongnu, last Mongolian, and many in the middle like Turks. Today it's not use to separate people any more, and it's a culture heritage of China and a tourist attraction.
