What does the jet stream have to do with a tornado?

  1. The Jetstreams don't have a direct relation to tornadoes but many convective lows are born on the front between polar and temperate air masses.

    In that cyclonic region and due to many factors like the terrain, tornadoes might appear.

    But in a way, the Jetstreams are pretty much like horizontal tornadoes. What happens is that, the higher the temperature at the surface, the higher the tropopause will be because at the same pressure warmer air takes more place.

    So, right above a polar front, there is a kind of kink in the membrane that the tropopause represents. That kink, added to the Coriolis effect of the earth rotation creates a strong 'tunnel' of air moving at extreme speed.

    Jetstreams are moving mostly from west to east, on both hemisphere. But I once looked at the charts (I am a private pilot) and I saw one jetstream going south right over another one going north. Needless to say, I would like to be a pilot crossing the layer of turbulent air between the two!
