  2. The term tracking in kayaking refers to how straight of a path the kayak takes in the water. Short kayak are easy to turn therefore they track poorly and hard harder to keep in a straight line. Meanwhile, longer kayak are harder to turn which means that they track very well. Longer kayaks are prefered for open waters such as lakes and bays, while short kayaks are prefered for rivers, creeks, and ponds.
