What does the kola nut taste like?

I know that it was originally used to make cola drinks, though most of them are now made with artificial flavoring. I've read that chewing kola nuts is pretty common in some parts of Africa, so I was wondering what kola nuts tasted like. Do they taste anything like Coca-Cola? Are they crunchy or chewy?
