ps. yeah i heard that

B = Bomber

P = Pursuit

A = Attack

C = Cargo

T = Trainer

O = Observation

L = Liason

then later they finally used

F = Fighter

but my friend said

" i don't think "L" is entirely for the Liason .. our L-39 is an attack .. role a/c"

  1. L is for "Liaison" series.

  2. Good question...the Czech designed jet doesn't quite use the id's that the USAF does...A=attack, F=fighter, B=Bomber, etc.

    However, when it was first flown in the late 60's, it was considered a "light" attack jet..perhaps the L is a variant of the identification system USAF uses?>?>?

  3. L stands for the >letoun< , airplane or it follows the pre-war designations of the airplane manufacturer, aero vodochody

    it is not designated by the standard us abbreviations because of obvious reason it was NOT manufactured in the US but in the Czechoslowakia.

    L 39 in all versions ewxcept of the ZA version was dedicated jet trainer, with only limited AA and AG capability.

    The ZA version has reinforced construction and capability of carrying the unguided rocket pods.
