  1. There are legal mandates for minimum training requirements imposed on special education professionals.  These mandates come from state law and district policy in the USA.

Among the mandates include the near-equivalent of an AA degree.

This enables paraprofessionals to understand and interact with students with special needs from a more enlightened approach.  It also enables them to hare similar training, terminology, and methodology with the professionals that they work with.  Given the increased level of education and training some paraprofessionals may opt for employment in other fields with better compensation.

  2. Paraprofessionals must either have at least 2 years worth of college or pass a standardized test.  What has this done in the classroom?  Not much, other than make it more difficult to find people willing to do the job!

  3. I do not quite understand your question, but as a former I.A., a high school diploma is sufficient.

  4. Now-paraprofessionals also need to be highly qualified--

a high school diploma is no longer enough

to be a Para-you need 2 years worth of college (48-60 credits)

some Paras have become qualified by passing a standardized test
