English and Scottish: of recent origin (not found before the 1920s). It seems to be taken from the Italian word donna lady (cf. Madonna), but it has often been used as a feminine form of Donald.

The Spanish equivalent word is Doña (pronounced "dong-yah"), which means a a (female) owner, and is also used (sometimes written in its abbreviated form Dª) like the English Mrs.
