What does the phone jack data line do if you plug into a computer?

if you have 2 phone jacks and in one and if you plug in the phone to one only that one works what does the other one do???

The data port is for devices such as fax machines, modems or voicemail boxes. It is basically just a line splitter. You get nothing extra (eg a new line) out of it.
