  1. giving someone a run for their money, or someone giving you a run for yours is a reference to racing for money.  let's use cars as an example.  you and i are going to bet money on racing our cars against eachother.  if i win but it was a close race i would tell you "you gave me a run for my money"  this doesn't have to be taken literally.  if we were sales people and we were having a friendly competition as to who has the highest sales it could also apply.  if you beat me by a few dollars in sales i would say "i gave you a run for your money".  similar to "that was a close shave".  if i almost got hit by a car i could say "that was a close shave" and not be talking about shaving at all.  i would simply mean "that was close"  you know what i mean?  hope this helps.  "gave me a run for my money" is a figure of speech.

  2. "You're giving me a run for my money" is usually a phrase expressing that someone is being difficult instead of cooperative

  3. Giving someone a run for their money means that you are making someone work really hard to hold onto/achieve something.

I like to picture it as a race, where there's one presumptive winner who easily outruns everyone else. But all of a sudden, someone else breaks free of the pack and almost catches up with him, so our presumed winner has to actually try hard/run fast to win instead of just cruising and winning easily like everyone thought he would. So the presumptive winner still wins (for now), but he had to work harder than expected and was a little threatened because this other person "gave him a run for his money."

So to answer your quesiton about the song lyric, I'm guessing the singer is trying to tell his girl that she's really making him work hard to be with her/please her (harder than he thought he would/should, anyway). Hope that helps!

  4. What does the phrase "Your  (sic; actually You're ) giving me a run for my money" mean?

It means "you've been very competitive and were close to my performance."
