What does the phrase/term "winds aloft" mean?

  1. Aloft means a higher altitude.  They use the term "winds aloft" alot because that has a big affect on our storms.  If the winds at a higher altitude are strong, it's possible those winds can come down to the surface during a violent storm.  A lot of tornadoes are caused by what is happening aloft.  


  2. It normally refers to the wind conditions (speed and direction) well off the surface.  There is not a specific level that it conventionally begins, but typically it refers to levels above about 5 to 10 thousand feet above ground.
