  1. It's a rating that indicates the quality of the play.  This is typically a self-assigned rating by a team.  In tournament play, the level goes from B (lowest) to AA (highest.)  This is not only in USAV but is also used in many local leagues.  A team can sign up to play any level but the higher levels are VERY competetive.

  2. The letters associated with volleyball teams (leagues, tournaments, etc) generally denote the level of play.  While USA Volleyball tries to define what those levels are, they vary from region to region.

Competion usually falls in one of the following categories (from most competitive to least competitive:

Open - International, collegiate, professional level

    AA -

    A -

    BB -

    B -

    C - recreational play

Definitions from AA,A,BB, and B vary depending on who you talk to.  And for whatever reason, I'm having problems finding what those definitions are on the USA Volleyball site.
