  2. it was the third major vitamin discovered to be necessary for humans , hence  the first was called the A vitamins, the second B vitamins third C etc. actually it is asorbic acid and not technically a vitamin.

  3. The vitamins with letters (A, C, D, E, B1, B2, etc) don't really stand for anything. They aren't abbreviations, they are just designations. It would be the same thing if it was "Vitamin 3"  ;-)

    Along the same line, each of those has a proper name as well, and that's what you will commonly see on the "supplement facts" part of the label. Vitamin C should be listed as Ascorbic Acid.
