What does the quote, "from the rose proceeds a thorn, from the thorn a rose" mean?

This is an old 'Wise Saying from the Orient', and I am having some trouble interpreting it's meaning/hidden value. Can anyone give me they're opinion on what this means?

  1. I think it's somewhere along the lines of "Don't Judge A Book By It's Cover" . In this case, beautiful things always have a nasty side to them and nasty things always have a beautiful side to them. Hope i could help you :)
