What does the "x" and a number mean on a DVD-R and DVD-RW?

I just bought a DVD recorder and am looking at blank DVDs. On the R's and RW's, some say "x2,or x4 or x16" What isthe difference? What does that number mean?

  1. It means the speed it reads at, or the spead it burns / rewrites at.
