What does the rank number mean in a race horse work out?

Curlin worked out today, 01/24/08. 5 furlongs in 1:00:60. Track was good. Rank was 1/3.

that means there were 3 horses that worked 5f that day and Curlin was the fastest of the 3.  Careful thinking a workout time is any indication of what a horse can or can not do in a race.  I breeze my own horses at 5f in 1:05 on a regular basis.
