  1. It refers to the gallows which is what people were hung from to execute them, and that particular type of humor isn't particularly funny, it simply makes light of a situation that is likely to be fatal.

    Example:

    "You are about to be executed by having electricity pass through your body until you are dead.  Do you have any last requests?"

    "Yeah. Hold my hand, willya?"
