  1. They are both part of the epic cycle called 'The Returns' - the stories of the people returning from the Trojan War. The Odyssey is the story of Odysseus's return. Orestes relates to the return of Agamemnon.

    Since Odysseus was lost for ten years, by the time the events of the Odyssey take place, what happens to Agamemmnon and Orestes (which I won't get into) has already happened, so they are mentioned in the story line as an example to Telemachus.

    Orestes is the son of Agamemnon, so it's his story, and The Odyssey is another story where he is an important character. The Oresteia tells about the tragic curse on their family which probably explains a lot of what happens in The Odyssey. Basically, they're linked because of the characters and events that happen to them...
