  1. It means any contender not listed is 20/1 or a greater price

A way to look at it is that the perceived main contenders are displayed with their odds and 'bar' these you will get minimum of the price shown (in this case 20/1)

so to win the premiership in 2008/09 you may see

    man utd EVENS

    arsenal 5/2

    chelsea 5/2

    liverpool 10/1

100/1 bar (meaning all other teams are a minimun of 100/1)

note these figures are just of the top of my head!!

  2. bar means any horse not in the list is at a greater odds that the odd quoted in bar

    bar 20/1

means all the other horses are at 20/1 or greater

  3. It means all the rest are 20/1

  4. The rest of the players are 20/1

  5. I would have said that 'bar' is an abbreviated form of 'barring' as in 'barring accidents' but the dictionary says that 'bar' is of the verb 'to bar' the "imperative (form) used as a preposition e.g. bar one in betting". Fancy!

Anyway, it means 'excluding' those already quoted, so that the rest are priced at 20-1 upwards.
