  1. It refers to salt content


  2. If it is being used about water, it is dirty and stagnant.

  3. I think it's how much salinity is in water.

  4. Brackish water is usually the water that contains (more or less) half fresh water and half salt water.

  6. It's where a river empties into the ocean - for some distance up the river there is some salt intrusion and vice versa for some distance out into the ocean - brackish water is a mixture of fresh and salt.

    I've always thought it sounded like a dirty or ugly word, like you wouldn't want to be "brackish", but in fact there's nothing wrong with such water and some things thrive there that wouldn't anywhere else.
