What does the unfurling of the Chinese flag mean at every ceremony done by a PLA guard? ?

Something that I really am indoubt about since every guard (that I saw at the Olympic ceremony) unfurls their national flag at every start of the anthem before the first stanza. Is it a show of pride or is it just an exaggeration?
