  1. those are brackets.

    you use those when you are quoting something and is an error from what you are quoting. for example, if a book quoted "how is the theory..." and you put that in your essay, the readers would think you typed an error. so by doing this, "[H]ow is the theory..." the readers would know that you've corrected an error and that you didn't make the mistake.

  2. Words or letters may be bracketed when they are changed from an original quote. The bracket delineates the change. For example, you may be quoting someone who has left out a word. You can insert the word if you bracket it to show it was not there in the original. In the case above, the [H] was probably bracketed because in the original it was not there, or in the original it may not have been at the beginning of a sentence. You can also bracket part of a quote to correct spelling.
