What does the white star above a player's image on pokerstars mean?

A white star above a player's image means that they signed up via PokerStars.Net (as opposed to PokerStars.com).

This means that they don't have a real money account, and therefore can't play in real money games (ie. games that use real money deposited into a PokerStars account, as opposed to the free 'play' money).

I asked this at pokerstars support and they told me the player is not a real money player and does not hold a real money account.
